CalFresh Healthy Living
The CalFresh Healthy Living program, also known SNAP-Ed, is a program to promote healthy and active lives for seniors 60 and over. Funding goes to support classes that provide education on how to eat healthier by eating the MyPlate way as well as gardening. Funding also supports physical fitness classes such as Tai Chi, Matter of Balance, and more. We currently offer three classes physical fitness classes, please read below for more information on each one.
Falls Prevention
Falls Prevention is a program for adults 60 and over who have a fear of falling. Often when we have a fear of falling it causes us to lessen our movements which can in turn cause a fall when we do move. This program offers evidence based physical fitness classes that focus on moves that can prevent falls. We currently offer three physical fitness classes, please read below for more information on each one.
Tai Chi for Arthritis and Falls Prevention
The Tai Chi for Arthritis and Falls Prevention Program helps with balance, strength, mobility, and even relaxation. Movements target all the physical components needed to stay upright. This includes leg strength, flexibility, range of motion, and reflexes; all of which tend to decline with age. Movements are slow and structured so that all participants can join no matter their level of physical fitness. Tai Chi classes include 16, one hour sessions.
Bingocize®
Bingocize® is a 10-week, evidence-based health promotion program approved through both CalFresh Healthy Living and the National Council on Aging (NCOA). Bingocize® combines exercise and health information with the familiar game of bingo. This has been shown to be a great, fun way to get our seniors moving and socializing. Some of the goals are to help older adults: improve and/or maintain mobility and independence, learn and use health information focused on falls reduction, improved nutrition, and other health-related behaviors, engage older adults in social settings.
Matter of Balance
Matter of Balance is a nationally recognized program which practices techniques in cognitive restructuring. This form of cognitive behavior therapy not only helps with reducing the fear of falling, it has also been shown to improve client's balance. Throughout this course, seniors will learn about what issues they face with their personal fears of falling, and to shift their thoughts from negative feelings to a positive outlook. The Matter of Balance Program is eight session and participants will learn to view falls as controllable, set goals for increasing activity, making changes to reduce fall risk at home, and exercise to increase strength and balance.
