End Of Watch: January 22, 1948

On December 20, 1947, George W. Egenhoff was riding in a Sheriff’s car near Delhi on Highway 99, and while attempting to close the car door while the car was in motion, he was thrown and had his right humorous fractured. Mr. Egenhoff died January 22, 1948, from complications due to his injuries suffered in the automobile accident. He joined the Merced County Sheriff’s Office about 13 years prior to his death. [1935] 

George Washington Egenhoff was born in Mariposa County on February 22, 1868, to David Egenhoff and Marie A. Holtzcheiter. He was the 8th child born into this family of 13. His father David Egenhoff came to Mariposa County in the early 1850’ s. George attended schools in Mariposa, Mariposa Co., CA

George and his brother Frank Egenhoff were well—known mining men. In Jan 1909 they sold property that comprises seven claims, and 140 acres. Four of the claims were being worked, namely the Clearing House, New Years, Octopus and Original.

On May 28, 1914, he married Miss Nora Mae Phegley, they later divorced in 1927. George then married Miss. Olivia Hunter. Olivia was the daughter of Merced County pioneer and former Mayor of the City of Merced; Caswell T. Hunter and his wife Alimira W. Smith. George and Olivia were the parents of one daughter, Florence Lois Egenhoff.

Deputy Egenhoff was laid to rest in Evergreen Memorial Park.
