California Highway Patrol Officer Leonard L. Layton died in the line of duty on November 8, 1964 during a crash on Highway 101, 10 miles north of Ukiah.  Layton was 26 years old at the time and was stationed in Los Banos.  He was on his way to Eureka to testify in a trial when his car went over an embankment during a heavy downpour.  Layton was transported to a local hospital in Ukiah, where he succumbed to his injuries.


Layton was a native of Sacramento and a graduate of Sacramento City College.  He worked for the State Division of Beaches and Parks before attending the CHP Academy.  He was stationed with the Barstow office after graduating from the academy and then moved to the Eureka office before transferring to Los Banos.


Layton was survived by his wife, Pamela Jean, and his son Keith Guy, who was three years old at the time of his father's death.  He also left behind his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Leonard M. Layton of Sacramento.  His father also served as a member of the CHP.
