End Of Watch: August 27, 1972
Officer Alfred G. Johnson on Aug 27, 1972 had just stopped a vehicle for speeding and was exiting his vehicle to begin the enforcement contact when an oncoming motorist struck the left front of the stopped vehicle, then hit and killed Johnson. The 29-year-old patrol officer had been a member of the CHP for six years and had previously served in San Leandro, Los Banos and Merced Area offices.
Alfred Gustav Johnson was a native of Berkeley, born Sept 1, 1943. The family moved to the City of Merced when he was three. He attended local schools in Merced. He was the son of Alfred Johnson and Ethel Johnson, brother of Helena Johnson Bish. He married Mary Margaret Ray on March 16, 1964 in Contra Costa County, CA; they had two children; son Daniel and a daughter Cynthia. His wife Mary M. Johnson passed away Jan 3, 2015 in Auburn, GA.
He joined the CHP in 1966 when he was 23 years old. He was laid to rest in the Evergreen Memorial Park.
