Many research studies have proven the safety and benefits of fluoridation water. For 75 years, people in the Untied States have been drinking water with added fluoride and enjoying the benefits of better dental health. Drinking fluoridated water keeps teeth strong and reduces cavities by about 25% in children and adults. By preventing cavities, community water fluoridation has been shown to save money both for families and for the US health care system.
What is Water Fluoridation and How Does It Work?
- Fluoride is a mineral that occurs naturally and is released from rocks into the soil, water, and air.
- Almost all water contains some fluoride, but usually not enough to prevent tooth decay.
- Fluoride works by stopping or even reversing the tooth decay process—it keeps tooth enamel strong and solid.
- Fluoride helps to remineralize tooth surfaces (if acid from bacteria affects it) and prevents cavities from forming.
Both the City of Merced and City of Los Banos provide consumers with fluoridated water. See the most recent Consumer Confidence Reports for more information.
