Megan's Law
Law Origin
Megan's Law was enacted in 1996. It provides public access to sex offender information, including addresses and photographs for certain registrants, via the Attorney General's Megan's Law website. Approximately 25% of offenders are not on the public website, but are known to law enforcement. This is a legal determination made by the Department of Justice. By law, no information, except what is available in public court records, can be disclosed concerning those registrants. Registered sex offenders who are granted exclusion from the public website, must still register for life.
