Matt H. May was appointed to complete the term of retiring Assessor-Clerk-Recorder-ROV, Barbara J. Levey on December 28, 2020. The Assessor’s responsibilities include valuing all assessable real and personal property in Merced County. The Recorder’s responsibilities include recording, indexing and filing legal documents such as property transfer records, liens, deeds, maps, and discharge certificates. The County Clerk’s responsibilities include issuing marriage licenses, fictitious business names, notary public registrations and oaths.
Matt currently serves as the elected Assessor-Clerk-Recorder. He has been a member of the Merced County team since June of 1997 and has previously held the positions of Appraiser, Supervising Appraiser, Chief Appraiser and Assistant Assessor-Clerk-Recorder. He is currently a member of the County Recorder’s Association of California, the California Association of Clerks and Election Officials and the California Assessor’s Association where he serves on the Standards Committee. He is committed to providing professional and accurate assessments and recordings while maintaining the highest level of customer service.
Prior to serving Merced County, Matt was self-employed as Fee Appraiser performing real estate appraisals in Merced, Toulumne, Calaveras, Mariposa and Stanislaus counties. He attended Merced College and obtained a Bachelor of Science degree in Agricultural Management with a concentration in Appraisal and Finance from California State University San Luis Obispo.
Matt and his wife Kari live in Atwater and are the proud parents of two sons. Their youngest son Rayce is a senior at Buhach Colony High School and their oldest son Ross attends the College of Veterinary Medicine at the University of Arizona.
