It is recommended that people wear a cloth face mask to protect themselves from COVID-19 in public settings where social distancing is difficult to maintain. A face mask should be used by people with COVID-19 who have symptoms to protect others from getting infected. Health workers and other people who are taking care of someone infected with COVID-19 in a close setting should wear a mask. The recommended cloth face masks are not surgical masks or N-95 respirators as those should be reserved for healthcare workers and other medical first responders. Guidance on making a cloth face covering can be found at: https://www.cdc.gov/coronavirus/2019-ncov/downloads/DIY-cloth-face-covering-instructions.pdf.
